Winter Rules
This winter all golfers at Stone will be playing from fairway mats. Green staff and officials of the Club will ask you to leave the course if you are not using a mat and green fees will not be refunded. Mats will be used from November the 1st until the start of the 2026 golf season. The ball is to be played as it lies in the rough. Relief can be taken from a ball embedded in its own pitch mark in the rough under the embedded golf ball rule. The ball can be removed from its pitchmark, cleaned and then dropped within one club length no nearer the hole.
To help us keep our course in great condition please can I ask you to adhere to the following.
1. No Buggies
2. Where possible please carry your bags. All visitors must have their own bag and set of golf clubs.
3. If you need to use your trolley, please use winter wheels if you have them.
4. If you need to use a trolley please keep to the edge of the fairways / semi rough.
From October 1st until the use of mats is compulsory We have implemented the use of preferred lies in the general area of the course. This decision has been made to ensure fair play and maintain the quality of our course during current weather conditions.
Preferred lies mean that players are allowed to mark, lift, clean, and place their golf balls within the general area, within a specified distance, 6 inches, and no closer to the hole. This rule is typically applied when adverse weather conditions, such as wet or muddy conditions, might affect the fair play or risk damage to the course.
In golf, the general area encompasses a significant portion of the course, but there are specific areas that are not considered part of the general area. They are the:
Teeing Area: This is the designated area from which a player begins a hole. It is specifically prepared for teeing off and is not part of the general area.
Putting Green: The putting green is where the hole is located and is specially prepared for putting. It’s not part of the general area; rather, it’s a specific area where golfers complete each hole. Normal rules apply.
Bunkers: These are sandy areas marked as hazards on the course. They’re not considered part of the general area due to their unique playing conditions and rules governing play from these areas. Normal bunker rules apply.
Penalty Areas: These are areas on the course marked as hazards, often containing water or other challenging obstacles. Like bunkers, penalty areas are not part of the general area. Normal penalty area rules apply.
Excluding these areas, virtually everything else on the course falls under the umbrella of the general area where players usually take their shots between the tees and greens.
